The Inner Wheel Club of Laurencekirk held their January meeting once again, via Zoom. What would we have done without Zoom over the past couple of years. One of the advantages of a virtual meeting is that we can invite speakers from far and near. Our speaker for the evening was Angela Williams, a member of the Inner Wheel in the north west of England and her talk for the evening concerned Sightbox.
Sightbox was created by visually impaired children from St Vincent’s School in Liverpool who were concerned with the lack of access to equipment and technology for visually impaired children and individuals living in third world countries. Working with the Liverpool Rotary Club, St Vincent’s School worked to fund and create the Sightbox to be shipped to children who were visually impaired like themselves.
A Sightbox is a container filled with equipment which provides blind and visually impaired children with the technology needed to access sports and have a more independent lifestyle. Visually impaired students face high levels of unemployment and significant social hurdles throughout their lives. The project has grown across the world and with Angela being a passionate ambassador for the charity, her role has taken her to countries in Asia and Africa. In fact, Angela found herself stranded in The Gambia following the lockdown. Four months of lockdown with limited clothes, accommodation, food etc. was not a lot of fun!
The vote of thanks was given by President Marion, which followed an interesting question and answer session.
