Our December meeting was held as usual at the Panmure Arms Hotel where we all enjoyed an excellent Christmas Dinner.
Our speaker was Sheila Mann, a retired head teacher from Hillside. This was not the first time that Sheila has spoken at our meetings. Her previous visit Sheila spoke about the Scottish writer and poet, Violet Jacob and also another Scottish poet and Suffragette, Helen Cruickshank.
Choosing Christmas as her theme for this visit Sheila set the scene with some reminiscences of her childhood Nativities at Hillside, which involved all the local children and were organised by The Revered Sinclair’s wife and went on for some 30 years.
Further memories of her student days as a “postie” in Hillside and finally enthralled the members before her conclusion with excerpts from the Oxford Book of Christmas poems.
Secret Santa gifts were exchanged and Gladys provided us with an amusing game of creating a Christmas tree by simply tearing a A4 sheet – an interesting variety of trees!
10 January is the International Inner Wheel Day of Service where members worldwide celebrate the Inner Wheel movement in a many different ways. We distribute flowers, bulbs etc. to our knitters. We make up blankets, childrens, hats, scarfs etc. which go to Blysthwood for distribution to those less fortunate than ourselves. Recently we sent 74 baby hats to Blythswood!
Our next meeting will be held via Zoom on 10 January.
