The January meeting of the Howe o’ the Mearns Heritage Club took place on 22nd and was as usual well attended.
Mike Robson had been unable to arrange a guest speaker, so challenged the members to come prepared to present some of their own experiences from days gone by to demonstrate how life has changed in the interim.
There was a brilliant response covering a wide range of subjects which included tattie picking as a child and starting off by taking a “half bit”; the days of extended families sharing not only a house but a bed; the traditional bank manager and the provision of a personal service; the rehabilitation of prisoners – a world away from Laurencekirk and even more tales from the past.
The members enjoyed the evening and intend to repeat the exercise collecting the reminiscences for their local history archive.
