Huge Thank You
On 21st June, The Rotary Club of Laurencekirk & District took part in the Ride Rotary 2015 Cycle event. This was a national initiative to raise funds for Prostate Scotland and to raise awareness of the high incidence of the disease in Scotland. Each Rotary Club was challenged to cycle to their nearest neighbouring Club, and so form a direct link between all Clubs. Stonehaven Club cycled to Laurencekirk, Laurencekirk cycled to Montrose, etc.
In addition to the main event in which 18 participants, including a 13 year boy, took part, Laurencekirk also organised a Mearns Circle, heading to Auchenblae and then to Fettercairn, before returning to Laurencekirk. 17 participants took part in this challenge including 6 school children. A third event, specifically for families and primary school children, was arranged around Denlethen Wood. 40 participants took part. Subsequently, on Tuesday 23rd, a senior Rotarian and a friend cycled to Fettercairn and returned to Laurencekirk.
Many of the participants were sponsored by family, friends, and neighbours and the current total of money raised so far is £3393.00. Many sponsors indicated that their donation would be available for Gift Aid, and it is estimated that the total being presented to Prostate Scotland from Rotary Club of Laurencekirk & District will exceed £4000.00.
All members of the Rotary Club wish to pass on their sincere thanks to all participants and sponsors for their huge efforts that made the day such a success, sometimes in appalling weather conditions. A special mention to Nestrans who had a varied selection of cycles (penny-farthing, tricycles, recumbents, and battery-powered, etc.) for participants to “test drive”, and to the Bike Shed from Edinburgh which gave free advice and carried out repairs and adjustment to participant’s cycles.
A very enjoyable day, mixing fund-raising, exercise, fresh air, fun, with a mixture of bad weather thrown in for good measure.
