The second meeting of the season took place on Tuesday 8 October 2024 at the Panmure Arms Hotel, Edzell, when we had a good turnout of members on what was a dreich evening, weather wise.

It wasn’t long until things brightened up with a very interesting career talk from Morag Smith, a well-travelled and fascinating young woman from Arbroath. Morag attended Arbroath High school and is a former pupil of our President and her husband.

Whilst at school Morag, had a special aptitude for art and music, and one would assume that she would go on to study one of these subjects at university. Not so, and after some good career advice from our President, Morag started a Geology degree at St Andrews University

On completing her degree, Morag went on to study at master’s level at Camborne School of Mines in Cornwall, where she met her husband. Her first job was at Boulby Mine, near Whitby in Yorkshire, where mining of potash and salt takes place. Morag would start work before 7am where first thing, she had to descend 1400 metres down the mine shaft, working in extreme temperatures, taking and logging samples in what was mainly dark conditions, for twelve-hour shifts.

Morag and her husband then moved to the Australian outback, both working in the mining industry. Morag’s next jobs saw her working with oil companies Shell and BP on the Swan River in Perth, with spells in New Zealand as well.

In 2020, Morag had her first baby, and the pull of family and friends saw them returning to Arbroath in 2021 as a family of four.

Following her return to Arbroath, Morag remains true to her passion and set up her own company, ‘Stories of Stone’, with guided walks exploring the geology, history and scenery of Angus, allowing her to share her outstanding knowledge of this subject.

The vote of thanks was given by our President.
