The 2018 Laurencekirk Bowling Club Open Pairs competition, sponsored by CNG Design, local kitchen, bathroom and bedroom specialists, was held on Sunday 1st July. A full complement of 24 teams, from the Mearns and further afield, started the competition on a beautiful, sunny morning.
The competition was played in a round robin format of 6 sections up to the quarterfinal stage, the six section winners and the best two runners up completing the quarterfinalists. After very hard-fought quarterfinals, the four teams to emerge as semi-finalists were from Laurencekirk, Portlethen, Brechin Parkview and Kittybrewster. Portlethen (Fred Wyness and Anne Murray) beat Laurencekirk (Willie Robb and Frances Roberts) 9 shots to 4, while the Kittybrewster pair of Jim Forbes and Alan McBrearty narrowly beat Parkview (Barry Leal and Derek Reid) by 6 shots to 5.
In a closely contested final, Kittybrewster beat Portlethen by 6 shots to 5.
